October 2019 – Newsletter

Welcome to the second of my Newsletters this year. This will be my last one as Chairman since, as many of you know, I shall shortly be moving to Broadstairs in Kent. I have been at the Club for the past 18 years, the last 8 of which as Chairman. I have enjoyed my time here greatly and will miss the many friends I have made over the years.

NB Tennis now run our coaching programme with Matt Woodhead as their coach/manager at the Club. Further details on the new adult coaching sessions are set out in the coaching section below. Organised social play continues on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday morning from 9am and Saturday afternoons from 2pm.

Gary Payne is the Club Welfare Officer and his details are on the notice board. The LTA is coming to inspect our welfare arrangements next month so look out for an e-mail survey shortly to all members to help us pass this inspection. All Club Policies and Rules are on the notice board at the Club and on the website.

The Courts

Please keep off the two acrylic courts as they are only in use for junior coaching at present.  A permanent resurfacing solution is our ultimate goal although this will be very expensive. However, we have been alerted to the possibility of obtaining some form of loan/grant funds to help us in this regard. The fact that the LTA helped us install floodlights might help further our quest for such funding.

Fund raising/Future Events

Elliott Scott, assisted by Adeline Fox one of our newer members, is now looking after social events.  The first such will be the annual presentation evening on Thursday 28th November at 8.00pm in the small bar.  Further details to follow. If you have any new ideas for fund raising, not necessarily confined to Club premises, do please let them know.

The 100 Club needs lots more members to sign up please.  The cost is only £48 a year (less than a £1 a week) and there are 2 prizes each month, one each of £30 and £15.  Could I please encourage you to contact Bernie, our Treasurer, and sign up today! You can pay in a lump sum or monthly Direct Debit if preferred. All profits to Club funds.

some excellent news from the Men’s Vets Doubles Team who won the Division A title in the summer.  The match that clinched the title took place on a Sunday morning over 4 hard sets. Well done to the four that played: Tony Garrett, Dave Butt, Peter May and Cenk Saglam.  Then, in the afternoon, two members of the team – Tony and Dave – won the North Kent Men’s Vets doubles title. A great achievement all round.
